Who the landlord is
Maki Apartments landlord is Paul Maki. I built the building in 1978 before I sought my fortune in Wisconsin. Today I live near Madison, Wisconsin, and operate Blue Skies Farm, a small organic vegetable and raspberry farm. I travel to Houghton regularly, usually monthly. For more of my background see my biography under Blue Skies Farm pages.
I like to think that I have standards that are higher than average for rentals in the Michigan Tech area. That was affirmed when Houghton's Building Inspector told me that this is one of the nicest buildings he's inspected. I'd like to think that remark has to do some with me, but really mostly it has to do with my tenants who take care of the place on a day-to-day basis. Thank You! As always if there are ever any issues contact me immediately. Or visit with me in person, when I stop in to check on the building.
Here are some of my Expectations:
In winter, that you do not park directly in front of the building. This is to the plow guy room to get through and so that someone doesn't back into your car
Be courteous to your neighbors and respectful of their need to study or sleep.
If there is ever a physical problem with the building, call me immediately -- any time of the day or night!
If for some reason you expect to be late with the rent - to call me at 608-335-7825 beforehand -- to explain your situation.
The Maki apartment building is a six unit, two-bedroom, building located across the street from the entrance to Lots 21/26 near the top of the Garnet Street hill at 612 Garnet Street . The MUB is a 5-minute walk away. Jim's Food Market is two blocks away. Cable and high speed internet are available. Laundry is provided in the lower level via two new, energy efficient coin operated machines. The apartments are energy efficient, with tight windows and above normal sound barriers to prevent noise from being transmitted through the floors. All are partially furnished. Typical furnishings include single beds, dressers, sofa, chair, kitchen table and chairs stove, refrigerator and microwave. The paint is lead-free, so if you have children you don't have to be concerned.
Rent
Rent is based on the number of people in an apartment. Base rent for one adult is $600 per month. A second person adds $50 for a total of $650 per month. Rent is due before the third day of each month. If it is paid after the third day a $25 late charge is added. Please call me if you are going to be late with your rent to avoid the late fee.
Security Deposit
A security deposit of $500 is required. If two people are renting, each will be expected to pay $250.
Included in your rent is:
Off-street parking for a maximum of two automobiles, snow removal, trash pick up from the dumpster and access to a shared vegetable garden.
Utilities
Tenants are responsible for electricity and heat. The landlord pays for water and sewer. When you move in you must call UPPCO, the electric service, and SEMCO, the gas providor to place the services in your name. The heat forced air natural gas. Tenants can expect winter heating bills around $50 a month.
Pets
I'm a pet owner, but I'm sorry to say, that I can no longer accept pets due to some unfortunate incidents. Visitors may bring a pet for a few days.
Leases
Apartments may be leased for 10 or 12 months of the school year. Occasionally summer leases will be available. Call Paul at 608-335-7825 for specific questions or for an application. You must fill out a rental application and have a form of identification, preferably a drivers license. A student ID will work if you don't drive.
Typical floor plan
All the apartments have the same spacious, approximately 900-square-foot, floor plan.
This floor plan is a representation of an apartment on the left half of the building, on the right it's a mirror image.
Bedrooms are about 12'x11': one has a 12-foot closet, the other an 8 footer. The bath is typical 5 ft by 8 ft, with a tub, toilet, vanity and a quiet exhaust fan.
The kitchen has either laminate flooring or tile, as do the Dining Rooms. (Except #4, which has carpeting.) The kitchens have 14 feet of counter space in a U-shape with generous cabinets.
The dining room and living room are connected for a combined size of 12-ft wide by 30 ft. long. Cable and phone connections are in each apartment. Those services, if wanted, are the tenant's responsibility.
